In this episode we host Ginger Montes from Naval Surface Warfare Center Corona. Ginger is a certified CPI black belt and has led many kaizen events in labs. Today we talk about making positive changes in laboratory processes through lean (six sigma) principles in small steps. Ginger was a United States Marine calibrator, graduating in 2000 from the Marine and Navy school house in Biloxi, MS.

On this episode we talk with Dan Sundberg about the unique challenges of being a field service Metrologist and the need for experience when sending someone to a customer's location.
Dan began his career in the Navy where he learned metrology at Lowry AFB. He spent 20 years in the Naval metrology programs with career highlights as a Metrology Instructor for the Navy where he was recognized as the instructor of the quarter 6 times, and instructor of the year for the entire PMEL wing resulting in the award of the Naval Achievement Medal for an outstanding tour as an instructor.
After the Navy Dan worked in the civilian metrology community starting at Precision Metrology where he got his feet wet with commercial field service metrology. Next he went on to be a technical and quality manager for Florida/Acme Metrology where he expanded their accreditation by an impressive 300%
Dan is now employed as a Sr. Metrology Engineer with Abbott where he is enjoying a challenging and different environment to continue to learn and share with others the knowledge and experience in Metrology.
He is also an active Metrology community member working with the NCSLI Educators Corner and Metrology ambassador groups.

On today's show we talk to Shawn Byrd the technical manager for Tinius Olsen Testing Machine Company.
As Technical Manager at Tinius Olsen, Shawn’s primary focus is on materials testing and the application of
various standards using different testing platforms to assist in the evaluation of materials and products. Shawn
has the responsibly at Tinius Olsen to ensure the personnel and internal procedures for calibration comply with
and are in accordance to ISO 17025 and any other requested requirements.
Shawn is also a member of the Tinius Olsen M.A G. or Market Analysis Group, which has responsibility for
market analysis in relation to Tinius Olsen’s position in the marketplace. In addition to his membership in ASM,
Shawn is also a member of the following ASTM International Committees, A01 on Steel, Stainless Steel and
related Alloys, D30 on Composite materials, C09 on Concrete and Aggregates, E28 on Mechanical Testing
and F16 on Fasteners. These groups have over 1000 members combined and are responsible for over 250
standards. Shawn is also involved with Tinius Olsen and ASTM working on collaborative projects with colleges
and professional industries. Shawn provides training on various platforms of mechanical testing to assist
clients and students to achieve a level of competence needed for success in the always changing society of
testing. This includes both hands on and classroom instruction.
Shawn has been involved in testing labs in the US, UK, Europe, China, India and Singapore. During his tenure
in the US Navy, Shawn completed his degree in Electrical Engineering. Shawn has completed degreed
studies in both the mechanical engineering and material science arenas as well. Shawn has completed and
taken part in numerous Nadcap, A2LA, UKAS and ISO audits

Thomas has been in metrology for over 20 years and has experience at Hart Scientific, Fluke in American Fork, Fluke in the Uk, and Fluke in the Netherlands as a leader in temperature measurements. Thomas has a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Utah and now owns a metrology consulting firm Harper Metrology.

Jeff Gust is the Chief Corporate Metrologist for Fluke.
He has been an active member of the metrology community, writing and presenting numerous technical papers. He has developed quality and training documents for NIST and for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). He has served as a consultant to several accreditation bodies and was an ISO/IEC 17025 assessor for 9 years. Jeff was President of NCSL International and has served for many years on its Board of Directors. Jeff represents NCSLI at the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and is currently the Chair of the Laboratory Committee and member of the ILAC Executive.

ISO/IEC 17025:2017 General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories
